The Neighborhood - Hamilton heights

The name comes from the fact that Hamilton Grange (see drawing above), Alexander Hamilton’s summer home, is here. It is actually on Convent Avenue only a few blocks down from our house (current picture of Hamilton Grange at right). Back in Hamilton’s day this was all farm land.

Why is it called Sugar Hill?

Sugar Hill isn’t actually a hill at all. It actually sits on a bluff high above the Harlem Plain. A bluff that affluent people, of all races, moved to so they could look down on the common folks. The name comes from the fact that “sugar” represents money, and living the sweet life. Which the residents of this neighborhood definitely did - and do. Sugar Hill/Hamilton Heights boast some of the most spectacular Brownstones in all of NYC (Ours being one of them, of course).

Why is it called Hamilton heights?

City College of New York

City College was founded in 1847. It is one of the most beautiful universities I have ever seen. It’s not too shabby on the education side either considering it is the alma mater of eight Nobel Prize winners. It is located just eight blocks down from our house, and occupies 36 acres along Convent Avenue from 131st to 141st streets.
